Incorporating Vintage Tools into a Light Painting Still Life
Jan 09, 2026If you have followed my work for some time, you know that I love incorporating vintage tools into my light painting still life work. In my latest still life (below), I wanted to highlight these beautiful transparent handles that were a hallmark of this type of tool decades ago.

The background for this image was made for my friend, photographer Jim Lawson, by Mike Kortan, a very skilled woodworker. Recently, Jim kindly gave me the background, and of course, I was very excited to use it in an image!
Why do I love photographing vintage tools and machinery? Just one of the many reasons is that I have immense respect for the individuals who utilized them and also for the exceptional build quality, something that we now seem to have taken for granted in this age of machine made, low-quality products.

I absolutely love using my still life light painting techniques, which I refer to as "Sculpting with Light". This approach enables me to reveal captivating details in subjects that often go unnoticed; features that are not typically visible under ordinary lighting conditions.
