Light Painting The Still Life - The Persistence Of Life

"The Persistence of Life" © Harold Ross

A few years ago, we had to cut down a rapidly growing tree that was just two feet from the foundation of our house. If left unchecked, its roots would have penetrated the foundation, causing cracking and other problems.

The Paulownia species, or "Princess Tree", is actually considered an invasive “weed tree.” Its rapid growth can pose significant challenges.

In fact, this particular tree grew over 25 feet in a single season!

In certain regions of Asia, the wood from this tree is highly valued and utilized to craft small boxes and furniture.

Surprisingly, after we had cut down the tree, we discovered that one log in particular was still producing new growth!

This made me think about the tenacious resilience of life. The basic instinct to survive is incredibly strong, whether we are talking about a plant, an animal, or a human. There’s just something about life that makes us want to keep going.

I had my own personal reasons for photographing this tree trunk with its sprouting leaves, which didn't appear until weeks after the tree was taken down. My intention was to capture this moment through my still life light painting techniques which I teach in great depth in my Light Painting The Still Life Online Video Course. I made this image as a reminder to myself of the fragility and beauty of life.

A memento mori of sorts.

Happy Light Painting... and always remember... Skim The Light.
